KELLI BROOKS
BURLINGTON, VERMONT
My creative path as a potter began with my membership in the Burlington City Arts clay studio. I loved the collaborative nature of working and learning within a community of artists. The exchange of ideas and techniques fostered my years of working toward finding my personal artistic voice within the clay medium.
My love of creating functional art lies in the way a piece can be woven into the fabric of everyday life, particularly the moments which can bring reflection and connection. A favorite mug adds an element of beauty and joy to a morning coffee ritual. A chosen vase can be an integral part of the flower arrangement that brings beauty to a space. Setting a table with favorite bowls and plates communicates the love of gathering to share time together.
My work is characterized by the tactile and visual contrasts created through sgraffito, chattering, taping, and carving techniques. The organic nature of hand drawn sgraffito guides the eye to follow the story of the design. Taping, in contrast, creates clean lines and bold pattern distinctions. Chattering is a practice of using uncontrolled instinct to create captivating patterns that evoke rhythmic flow within the form. Carving adds depth and dimension to the landscape of form and void within a piece. The use of these techniques allows me to explore the tension between simplicity and complexity, control and chance, to create work which is both visually engaging and physically inviting. Through this feeling of invitation, my artistic goal is to create pieces which are meaningful to the best moments in daily life.
