CHARLIE ADAMS

SOUTHERN VERMONT

Charlie Adams grew up on his family's ancestral land in the hills & rivers of southern Vermont. Drawing from the plant and animal medicine, the supernatural ecology, and ancient forms that surrounded him. Charlie engages with his work as an act of translation, to draw visuals to the stories embedded in the landscape of the native northeast.

His recent works explore communication between spirits and interactions that happen between the worlds. The imagery seen in Charlie’s work is deeply informed by his Abenaki heritage and the inter-generational passing of stories. Charlie carries traditions from a lineage of artisans and often returns to leather block printing, birchbark etching, and illustration to communicate.

Statement for Leather Block Series:

“Dreams have always led me back.
During a time of recovery in winter of 2022 I had a series of dreams that I translated into a series of prints. Using cut leather adhered to a wooden block each print is laid on Nepalese lokta paper, and danced ontop of sun-wise. The impressions of my movement and the skin-memories in the leather transfer onto the paper. These prints were created to go on their own journeys, to protect and oversee, to speak to places, and to be witnessed.”

We have a limited selection for our online store. Please call the gallery to inquire about a specific piece seen in-store.
