Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)

Gretchen Verplanck

July 1st - July 31st

Opening Reception July 6th from 4pm to 6pm

Get ready to dive headfirst into the quirky chaos of Gretchen Verplanck’s latest show, Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps). Gretchen is back with a bang, turning Frog Hollow into a playground of ceramic mischief. In 2020, Gretchen decided the world needed more cheeky little monsters. She returned to her roots in sculpture, creating her first impish creature. This exhibition is a wild mashup of her figurative art skills and a wicked sense of humor, resulting in a horde of ceramic monsters with attitude.

Known for her functional pottery that is both finely detailed and hilarious, Gretchen’s new direction is all about fun. A menagerie of mini-monsters, each with a look and vibe that is sure to make you do a double-take.

Don’t miss out on the chance to delight in Gretchen Verplanck’s Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), a punk rock carnival of ceramic creatures that is bound to leave a mark.

For Gretchen, the magic lies in the making. Her mission? Pure joy. “I like knowing that people will pick up a piece and smile.” And smile they will, because these pieces are nothing short of joy bombs.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gretchen Verplank survived school thanks to her art classes. Originally from Wickford, Rhode Island, she landed in Vermont in 1988 for Goddard College and fell in love with clay. She fine-tuned her craft at Alfred University, snagging a BFA in ceramic sculpture in 1993.

Life took its twists and turns—marriage, family, the usual chaos. But in 2020, Gretchen kicked the mundane to the curb and threw herself back into ceramics with a vengeance. Now, her creations can be found at Thirty Odd, Frog Hollow Craft Gallery, and her studio in Burlington.
